Horizontal Fences

horizontal-fence-panelThe nontraditional horizontal fence offers a look far from that of a side by side fence.  This style fence is perfect for more modern and contemporary looking homes.  The modern look it has seems to provide an atmosphere of being indoors while enjoying an outdoor environment.

Benefits of Vinyl Fencing

titan-fence-feature-vinyl_f_improf_300x212Vinyl fencing has become more popular in recent years primarily for its durability and appearance. Now there is nothing like a traditional wooden fence but we like to make our clients aware of all available fence options.

A vinyl fence typically lasts longer than a wood fence and is nearly 5 times stronger. This means you will be getting more for your money and are investing in something that should last a lifetime. Vinyl maintains its look and does not require painting. Most vinyl is the same color through the entire depth of the material and therefore does not need to be refinished or stained.
A vinyl fence is also easy to clean with most basic household cleaning products.

When making a decision on the right fence for you cost is normally always a consideration. A vinyl is one of the more expensive fencing solutions. If you are on a tight budget it may not be the best choice. It also requires a professional if any part of the fence is damaged and needs to be replaced.
When considering a new fence we suggest you contact one of our professional sales people who will assist you when making a decision to best meets your fencing needs.

Chain-link fencing / hurricane fencing stands the test of time

10644867_767785709925837_2667898989744246249_nThe workhorse of fences, chain link fence or hurricane style is utilitarian in design and economical in cost. It’s mostly praised for its high durability. The uses of chain-link fencing throughout America have grown dramatically since it was established here in the late 1800’s. Chain link fencing was invented by Charles Barnard in the United Kingdom in 1844 based on cloth weaving machines. Anchor Fence (established in 1898) bought the rights to the machine, and was the first US Company to manufacture chain-link fencing in the United States.

Titan Fence has installed a variety of chain link fences in and around North Texas. We also off it coated in a weather resistant vinyl (black, green or dark brown) if you prefer a different color. In addition, we also carry hurricane fence fabric, posts and rails, gates (swing and slide), and gate hardware for all chain link fence applications including residential fence, light commercial and industrial. Homeowners considering a chain link fence may need to consider HOA guidelines since some neighborhoods only allow certain fence types.

Halloween Traditions

decorations-scary-fake-spider-web-area-with-white-wood-stain-exterior-also-black-iron-fence-in-scary-outdoor-halloween-decorating-ideas-sinister-ouEver notice how a scary fence is in most Halloween pictures?  Where did this all start?

The general practice of going door-to-door for treats is clearly similar to a much older practice, “souling,” in which the poor would go from house to house begging for alms or food. However, the specific practice of “trick-or-treating” dates to around the 1930s. It is possible—though by no means certain—that it evolved as an antidote for the increasingly rowdy and costly Halloween pranks. It provided a healthier activity for the young and gave them an incentive not to play tricks.

We could easily make something up about the origins of Halloween costumes. We could say that people originally dressed as ghosts and witches to scare people, and that the practice eventually spread to include costumes of all sorts. But the fact is that we don’t actually know where Halloween costumes came from, only that the practice, like trick-or-treating, appears to have begun in early 20th century America.

Ever wish you had a taller fence?

Split_Rail-4Ranch Style Fences – We sell many of these and they can be a big project.  The state of Texas and the term “Ranch” go hand in hand.  What is the real definition of a ranch?  Patrick Murfee, the administrator of the Ranching Heritage Association in Lubbock, actually laughed out loud when we asked for one when being interviewed by Texas Monthly Magazine.  After talking to him and other experts in the field, they settled on four criteria that a Texas ranch must meet.

1. On the land in question, livestock—cattle, goats, horses, and the like—must be raised for profit.

2. The land can be noncontiguous but must be managed as one ranch—an important point, since many ranches, including the King Ranch, are made up of several chunks of land, some of which are hundreds of miles apart but are overseen by the same person or group.

3. The land must be in Texas. (Nearly 50 percent of the ranch owners on our list have acreage in other states or countries.)

4. The land must be primarily owner-operated; that is, owned and run by the same people, or at least members of the same family. Leased land doesn’t count. That’s why the venerable Kenedy Ranches aren’t on the list.

IN TEXAS IN 1998 THE RECIPE FOR FAME AND FORTUNE CALLS FOR NERDS, not herds. But you couldn’t get the owners of the state’s twenty largest ranches to trade their hundreds of thousands of acres—not even for millions of dollars in Dell Computer stock.

Where Did the Term Picket Fence Originate?

DSC_7464-300x199Origin of the Picket Fence
According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the term “picket” originates (in 1690) from the French “piquet,” from the verb “piquer,” meaning “to pierce,” hence the pointed shape of the picket. Once used as a weapon, the picket also helped form a barrier. As Random House indicates, its verb form means “to enclose within a picket fence or stockade, as for protection or imprisonment: to picket a lawn; to picket captives.”

History of the White Picket Fence
White picket fencing installations have existed since the early colonial days in American history, as the harsh conditions after the Revolutionary War called for sturdy, utilitarian and simple fence designs. This classic wood fence installation originated from medieval palings that were made of round stakes or flat strips of locally found wood. A white picket cedar fence may have easily been more expensive during the colonial days, particularly if the wood was imported from a location several miles away.

How often should I stain my fence?

imagesAs a rule of thumb you should stain a fence every 5 to 7 years depending on the type of wood.  We always  recommend a Cedar fence.  Cedar has natural oils and acids in the wood that make it undesirable to most insects. This allows the wood to be installed in its unfinished form and last for many years. Cedar also warps less than Whitewood or Pine fences.

It’s impossible to completely prevent the natural weathering that occurs to a wood fence over the years, but you can slow the process by protecting the wood regularly from the elements. The stain you use to cover the wood must cover every part of the wood exposed to moisture. It’s also important to use galvanized or stainless steel hardware in the wood because these metals won’t rust and they resist warping.
